TY Falcons V Hawks Debate

TY Falcons V Hawks Debate

On Friday the 1st of October things got heated in our Green Carpet Area as Transition Year classes Hawks and Falcons competed in a debate. The motion of the debate was ‘Zoos Are Prisons For Animals’. Both classes worked hard in their English classes in the week leading up to the debate. They worked in small teams, compiling research on their viewpoint and using linguistic skills to construct their opinion.

Ms. Cosgrave’s class Falcons argued in favour of the motion - they came up with a strong argument - speaking about issues in zoo’s such as; lack of space, cruel captivity, and the negative impact on wildlife being removed from their natural habitat.

Ms. Victory’s class Hawks were against the statement. They suggested that animals were protected in the zoo; that feeding was regulated, medical professionals were on standby, and the animals were protected against extinction.

Some members from Eagles were also present - Stephen O’ Leary, Leon Morgan, and Conor Newton were nominated to be our unbiased judges. The three boys were fantastic judicators, and even stepped in on occasion to ensure that the students did not go “off topic!”

It was a huge success with Ms. Cosgrave and Ms. Victory being extremely impressed with everyone’s participation, enthusiasm and efforts.

The winning team was Falcons with a score of 45 points.

Callum Hilliard wins best speaker as he was composed, confident and competent from the beginning to the end.

Well done to everyone involved - we look forward to more debates in the future!
