Transition Year

Please enjoy TY school promotional video 2019 directed & produced by TY and their Business teacher L Hussey.

Transition Year is an optional year and designed to act as a bridge between the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate programmes. We have a highly structured programme that is designed to develop our student’s academic, social and personal skills.

We offer students space to learn, mature and discover their own individual talents, aptitudes and abilities.

What a student gets out of TY depends hugely on the attitude he takes to it in the first place. It's a year long test so his level of engagement and effort will be his reward!

The NCCA conducted a research study on the performance of Leaving Certificate students and found that those who had taken the Transition Year Programs "were likely to be educationally more adventurous than those who chose not to follow the programme. That is, they were more likely to retain subjects at higher level, to move up from Ordinary to Higher level and from Foundation to Ordinary level. They were also more likely to take up subjects which they had not taken before."

Students will participate in new activities, sample a wide range of subjects, and attempt things they have never had an opportunity to do in their academic life before.

Subjects undertaken by our Transition Year students include: English, Irish, Maths, History, Geography, Music, Art, Business, French, German, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Construction Studies, DCG and Guidance.

Our Transition Year Students are involved in a wide range of projects and events which provides great opportunities for leadership & organisational experiences and training.

Work Experience is an integral part of the TY Programme.

Our Transition Year students take part in a 1 day work experience every week for the whole year. This provides a valuable opportunity to engage in meaningful work that will support them in their own research for their chosen career path. Each student must secure their own placements.

Transition Year in St. David’s 2019 – 2020

Unfortunately in 2019/20 we were unable to celebrate our TY Graduation in our usual end of year ceremony where we take huge pride on they skills and talents each student has developed and explored throughout the year. We went virtual for the TY class of 2020 to celebrate their achievements.

Virtual Graduation May 2020.

Please contact the school with any further questions on our TY Programme and we will be very happy to assist.
